Dreaming in Static: Revisiting Team Sleep’s Self-Titled Album

There’s a certain kind of album that feels like a dream you drift into and never fully leave. Team Sleep, the 2005 self-titled release from Chino Moreno’s side project, is exactly that: hazy, immersive, and beautifully strange.

For those unfamiliar, Team Sleep is fronted by Chino Moreno of Deftones, but this isn’t just a Deftones side hustle. Instead of crushing riffs, you get delicate guitars, whispered vocals, and downtempo beats that pull from shoegaze, trip-hop, post-rock, and ambient sounds. It’s music made for late-night drives, headphones in the dark, and moments when reality feels a little too sharp.

The Sound
From the opening track Ataraxia to the haunting Ever (Foreign Flag) and the gorgeous Your Skull Is Red, the album flows like a mood board of melancholy and atmosphere. Tracks like Blvd. Nights bring a narcotic pulse, while Princeton Reviewand Tomb of Liegia lean into acoustic melancholy.

Chino’s voice floats like a ghost over the entire album. Sometimes fragile, sometimes weightless, sometimes completely submerged in the mix. Alongside him, the band (which includes guitarist Todd Wilkinson and DJ Crook) crafts a textured, layered sound that feels both intimate and vast.

Highlights

  • “Ever (Foreign Flag)” — shimmering guitars and ghostly vocals that perfectly capture the project’s vibe
  • “Your Skull Is Red” — hypnotic and dreamy, with a melody that sticks in your head
  • “Blvd. Nights” — dark, pulsing, and seductive, like wandering city streets at 2 a.m.

Why It Still Holds Up
Even 20 years later, Team Sleep feels timeless. It didn’t chase radio hits or mainstream attention. It carved its own little space between genres, creating an album that rewards deep listening. Fans of Deftones, Massive Attack, My Bloody Valentine, or even Portishead will find something to love here.

Final thoughts
Team Sleep isn’t an album you blast at a party, it’s the soundtrack to solitude, reflection, and getting lost in your head. It’s one of those rare records that doesn’t just sound good, it feels like a mood you can step into. Whether you’re discovering it for the first time or revisiting it years later, Team Sleep remains a beautiful, underrated gem.
