“Safe in Your Skin” Still Hurts After All These Years A Nostalgic Look at a Band Gone Too Soon

It’s been way too long since Title Fight last played a show, and I still catch myself hoping they’ll come back. It’s been six years of silence, six years of scanning for any sign of a reunion, and honestly, it stings. They weren’t just another band; they were a soundtrack to late-night drives, basement shows, and figuring life out one song at a time. And if there’s one track that always brings me back to that feeling, it’s Safe in Your Skin.

Tucked away on 2011’s Shed, Safe in Your Skin has this slow, brooding tension that makes it one of their most haunting songs. It’s not the kind of track that explodes with energy right away—it builds, pulling you into this headspace of regret, longing, and that weird in-between feeling where you don’t know if you miss someone or if you just miss the past. The lyrics feel like a punch to the gut, especially knowing that the band who wrote them is gone, at least for now.

“I am barely holding on to everything I love…”

That line hits different now. Title Fight was one of those rare bands that didn’t just play music; they created entire worlds with their sound. They gave us something to hold on to, and then, just like that, they were gone. It’s not like they officially broke up, but after their last show in 2018, they just… disappeared. No farewell, no explanation, just members quietly moving on to other projects. Ned Russin has Glitterer, Shane and Jamie have done their own things, but the heart of Title Fight—the thing that made them so special—is frozen in time.

And yet, Safe in Your Skin still feels alive. Even now, when I listen to it, I can almost smell the sweat and cigarette smoke of a packed venue, feel the weight of a crowd pressing in, and see the stage lights flickering through the haze. It’s a song that doesn’t just remind me of them—it reminds me of a time when everything felt infinite, even when life was falling apart.

I don’t know if we’ll ever get another show, another song, another moment. But if this really is it, if Title Fight stays just a memory, at least we have Safe in Your Skin—a song that still aches in the best way possible. Under is a live playing in Sydney just two days before 9/11.
